| FEATURE Athlete Close Up Over the course of the year we will feature a close up on several of our top athletes as well as some of the up and coming racers, trying to find out what makes them tick. Our first athlete is Angus Howden from Wellington. Angus is the oldest member of the Volkswagen National Ski Team and he lives when not training and racing in Wellington. Angus used to train at Whakapapa where he got his introduction to racing and despite being selected to the Milo Team as a junior he had a career break until 2004. Angus then returned to the racing scene, with a BSc in Geology, with John Armstrong at Whakapapa before moving to Wanaka to train with World Ski Connect. Following several successful years he was selected to the Volkswagen National Team in 2007 and has never looked back. Angus is ranked second in New Zealand in Slalom, Super Combined, Super G; third in Downhill and fourth in GS. His immediate goals are to secure selection to the World Championships Team for Val d'Isere in 2009 and then the Olympic Winter Games at Vancouver in 2010. When not racing and training, Angus runs his own painting and decorating business, working all the extra hours to raise the funds to support his programme, however he is quick to point out that he would not be here today if it were not for the support of his sponsors, his parents and his coaches and clubs. Watch Angus progress this season on SRNZ website, www.skiracing.org.nz or www.angushowden.com |

TEAM NEWS Volkswagen Team Programmes under way Both the Volkswagen National Team and Volkswagen National Development Team have been training already this season. The Volkswagen National Team led by Coach Nils Coberger began their season at Coronet Peak but moved up to Mt Hutt after some poor weather. Two athletes were missing from this camp, Ben Griffin because of his on going injury and Tim Cafe because of exams. However, Mark Bridgwater, Angus Howden and Scott Gange benefitted enourmously from the opportunity to get on snow early thanks to NZski's investment in snow making. The Volkswagen National Development Team, led by Mike Gould and Pete Sanford began their training last Friday at Mt Hutt and have enjoyed several wonderful days on fresh snow. They move now back to Queenstown but will be returning to Mt Hutt in mid Juy.. |
