North Island Series GS - Turoa, Mt Ruapehu

11 August 2009

Auckland Grammar student, Jamie Green K2, representing Ruapehu Snow Sports scored gold in both the Mens Giant Slalom races on day one, of the North Island Series held at Turoa, Mt Ruapehu, August 8-9.

Jamie skied the 800m 34 gate Little Bowl course in 42.15sec. Two hours later he led the Mens field of 34 competitors comprising J, K2, K1 and E skiers down the second run.

The course dropped 200m from the start gate elevation at 2300m, near the top of the High Noon Express, down to the finish line just above the Giant Café.

Jamie Green was the only skier, apart from two of the Korean international forerunners, to break 40 seconds.

John Knowles K2, Auckland Grammar, placed second in the men's combined time Giant Slalom, on Sunday.

He was beaten by Wanganui Collegiate student Harry Izard-Price, and they both took a step up the podium positions when the 5th gate of the demanding GS course tripped up a flying Jamie Green, on the second and deciding run.

Auckland student, River Jones-Gardner K1, representing Ruapehu Snow Sports shows the style that bagged 3 gold medals in his division. He won both individual GS races on Saturday and he also won the combined GS races on Sunday. He was pushed hard on both days, by the North Shore’s Harry Eisenhut and Parnell College’s Faolan Gavigan, who shared the silver medal honours between them.

Kings School’s Tom Knowles cleaned up all the gold medals on offer in the boys E division.

On the ladies course, National Park School’s, Victoria Slegers, (see photo 4) K1, also made a clean sweep over the two days.

Ladies J skier, Laura Davey was fastest on the ladies course and her three out of three podium performances were matched by National Park School’s Lauren Armstrong in the ladies K2 division – both scored two golds and a silver.

Rising star Hazel Wells from Ponsonby Primary School, representing Albany based Northern Snow Sports, made all three podiums over the weekend in the girls E division.
