NATIONAL SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS WRAP UP WITH SUPER G

Griffin and Jarvis Claim National Super G Titles

MT Hutt, New Zealand – 07 September, 2009 – The National Championships today shifted from Coronet Peak to Mt Hutt for the final event of the National Championships, the Super G.

Top placing Kiwis Ben Griffin and Sarah Jarvis were crowned the Men’s and Women’s 2009 Super G Champions.

Griffin, of Ohakune, clocked a time of 1.03.01 finishing fourth overall while Jarvis, of Whakapapa skied to the finish line in 1.06.15 placing 11th overall.

Racers couldn’t have asked for better conditions with the Mt Hutt race department setting an outstanding Super G course.

“The Kiwis performed really well today on a fantastic course,” said Pete Sanford, National Development Ski Team Coach. “Full marks to the Mt Hutt race department for a well set, super efficient course, including a great jump.”

An international field dominated the races with the Men’s race won by Niklas Rainer of Sweden in 1.02.39. Polish Racer Maciej Bydlinski secured the silver medal in 1.02.93, while Nathan Asoian of the USA took out bronze in 1.03.00.

Britt Yanyk, of Canada, won gold in the Women’s GS in 1.41.40. Larisa Yurkiw of Canada secured silver with 1.02.32 and Germany’s Viktoria Rebensburg secured bronze with 1.02.38.

The second fastest New Zealander following Griffin was Tim Café, of Queenstown, who clocked a time of 1.03.04, placing fifth overall, while Angus Howden, of Wellington, finished ninth overall and was the third fastest kiwi with a time of 1.03.79.

Hot on Jarvis’ heals was the second fastest female Kiwi, Alexandra McGlinn, of Christchurch, who has had an outstanding season as a junior racer posting solid results in the senior categories. McGlinn posted a time of 1.06.26, while third fastest Kiwi, Taylor Rapley, of Queenstown in 1.06.32. McGlinn and Rapley finished 12th and 13th respectively.

The fastest New Zealanders in the junior categories were named Junior Champions.

The ‘Junior 2’ category champions were McGlinn in the Women’s, and Willis Feasey, of Twizel, in the Men’s.
Younger racers including Mt Ruapehu’s Bronte Marquet and Nick Prebble, of Christchurch, took top honours in the female and male ‘Junior 1’ category.
