DAY TWO OF THE AUSTRALIA NEW ZEALAND CUP FINALS
Mt. Hutt, New Zealand – 09 September, 2009 – Day two of the Australia New Zealand Cup took place with pristine conditions for the second set of Super Combined and the Super G races at Mt Hutt today.
Noel Baxter of Great Britain capitalised on the conditions taking first place in the Super Combined race in 1.43.45.
Baxter took the gold from Olivier Jenot, of Monaco, who finished in 1.43.64 in second and Maciej Bydlinski, of Poland, who clocked 1.43.74 in third.
Ben Griffin, of Ohakune, matched yesterday’s result, being the fastest male New Zealander across the line in 1.45.05, placing sixth overall.

In the Women’s race, it was a clean sweep for Poland, taking first, second and third. Katarzyna Karasinska was first in 1.43.44, while teammates Agnieszka Daniel Gasienica in 1.44.16 and Aleksandra Klus in 1.44.90 secured second and third respectively.

The fastest Kiwi, Sarah Jarvis, of Whakapapa, saved seconds in her slalom run to follow up in a fourth place overall with 1.45.45.
In the Super G event, where results are taken from the Super Combined, Angus Howden, of Wellington, led the Kiwis in the men’s with a time of 1.03.57 and placing sixth overall, while Alexandra McGlinn, of Christchurch showed her worth against the world-class field, placing fourth overall, becoming the fastest new Zealand woman in 1.06.39.

Top podium placing in the Men’s Super G went to Travis Ganong, of the USA, in 1.02.32. Jenot placed second in 1.02.61 and USA’s Nathan Asoian in 1.02.74 placed third.
Poland also took out the Women’s Super G with Daniel Gasienica through first in 1.05.36, Karasinska second with 1.05.41 and Klus in third with 1.05.77.
“It’s a massive event with World Cup Starting positions on the line,” said Chief of Race Paul Marks. “The World Cup circuit is really hard to get into so this really sets the tone for the upcoming Northern Hemisphere race season.”
Races continue this week with Giant Slalom and Slalom. Races start from 9:30 each morning and continue throughout the day until Friday. Spectators are able to view the race from the sidelines or watch the finish area and displayed times from the base area.
