SRNZ Selects Team for Alpine World Junior Championships 2009

Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany (February 27, 2009) Ski Racing New Zealand has named seven athletes to compete in the Alpine World Junior Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany this week.

The New Zealand Junior World Championships team will be made up of three men and two women, including Adam Barwood, 16, Queenstown; Leighton Winsloe, 19, Wanaka; Andrew Wiley, 19, Queenstown; Alice Ralston, 19, Auckland; and Taylor Smith, 16, Wellington.

The Championships are the highest level of international competition for alpine ski racers 15-19 years old with New Zealand Team members competing in super G, giant slalom and slalom.

Wiley and Ralston will compete in super G, giant slalom and slalom, whilst 2008 National Slalom Champion, Winsloe, will compete in slalom only. Smith is scheduled to race in technical events only and Barwood who is also selected for technical events will not be starting as he has returned home.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our young talent to put themselves against the best athletes in the world for their age,” says Simon Mills, Ski Racing New Zealand General Manager.  “We wish them all the best and look forward to seeing some strong performances.”

The team will be led by Jonny Rice, Coach and Team Manager with support from Adi Bernasconi.
